Tom, I want to congratulate you. You’re one of the special ones with the calling for service. I also want to thank you for all the good you’re about to do. To be a teacher, you must have thick skin and determination. It hurts when others think that they can do your job better than you because they went to school once and now think they know what education is all about.

Some will think you settled. Some will say uninformed things like, “Those who can do do; and those who can’t do teach.” You’ll see others take their families on nice vacations while you’re digging through your car’s ashtray for loose change to get a cup of coffee on your way to your second or third job. You’ll tutor, coach, or advise a club during your vacation time because your family needs the money extra to pay the bills.

To add insult to injury, some will say you barely work because you get summers off and all those vacation days. It’s very sad how truly uninformed a lot of the general public is on what a teacher really does.

You are a leader in the making. As a teacher, you’ll lead through your service to your school, your community, and the next generation. Never listen to the uninformed, who say that those who can’t do teach. The number of amazing things you’ll do with your students, even before lunchtime, will surprise many and even surpass what they do the entire day. As a teacher, you may not make a lot of money, but you will make some magic on a daily basis that will be passed on for generations to come.

So, in conclusion, Tom, follow your heart into teaching. It will lead you to become the most authentic person you can be. This world needs more heart-driven, authentic service-leaders like yourself. You will be making the world a much better place.
