Dear Granddaddy, I have worked very hard to become a teacher. And my students don’t seem to care about how much I know. Ben G. – frustrated and overworked teacher.

Ben, what you went through to become a teacher would amaze your students, and adults, too. Most never do all that you did, nor sacrifice all that you sacrificed to get a job. After doing all this to become a teacher, and be able to help today’s youth, I bet you were surprised when your students weren’t thanking you for your sacrifice and service. Heck, I bet you were shocked when you weren’t even appreciated for what you do and what you’ve done. However, I also bet your students haven’t a clue about what you’ve been through, let alone all that you know. So, if they don’t know it, then they can’t really be expected to appreciate it, right?

The other part of this equation is something I told one of my student-teachers. He was a former attorney who became a teacher. He was extremely intelligent. He would stand at the front of the class and pontificate brilliant things, but then was surprised when the students seemed bored in class.

I said, “John, the kids don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care.” Now, we’ve all heard the old saying about how content is king, but we also need to remember that we’re teaching kids. We’re not just teaching history, math, and English; but we’re teaching kids math, history, and English. It’s not really about the quality of the content or our own qualifications, it’s about reaching the kids. So, get in there, Ben, right in the middle of all the kids, and put all your focus on them, okay?

As teachers everywhere know, teaching is not easy. Teachers are unsung heroes, who don’t usually get the respect they deserve. But regardless, we have received the calling of service for the greater good. So don’t worry about all the stuff that doesn’t matter anyway, just get in there and do some good with the kids.
