Janice, I don’t blame you for a single second about being indignant. Everyone should be well aware of the perils of bullying by now. At this point, we all should know the harm that bullying causes…

Do you want to hear something interesting, Janice? Do you want to know who doesn’t bully others? People who are in a growth mindset don’t bully other people. People who work on their social and emotional intelligence don’t bully others. People who are happy with their successes in life, or at least happily working toward their successes don’t bully others. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it’s a good place to start.

So I say to everyone out there, go ahead and pick one or more of these skills and work on improving your life every day through it with all that you have. Also, help others do the same positive thing. And if you do come across someone who is bullying another, please realize that this person has simply not yet fully learned any of them.

We all can speak up and help bullies stop their bullying behaviors. There are others in the crowd who also want to speak up against bullies, but haven’t yet. But if we speak up, then that gives the bystanders the permission and courage that they were looking for to speak up, too!

Think about it for a moment. Just by speaking up, we have created a great opportunity for the bully, the bullied, and the crowd of onlookers to learn something. Our actions will also help others to think more about what they’re going to say or do before they say or do it. Our speaking up is a great strategy to diminish bullying in our schools and our society.

So, in conclusion, Janice, I’m glad you showed enough leadership to reach out to me so that we could create a discussion on the extremely important topic of bullying. We need more leaders like you, Janice! Keep doing all the good that you’re doing…
