Well, Woody, I can see the math, science, and logic in your question. However, we humans are a little more than just math, science, and logic. We’re humans!

And humans are emotional and spiritual creatures. We act on our feelings first, then we back up our behaviors and actions with logic. And that logic is usually math and science driven.

Many have written on your question, Woody. For example, let’s look at Viktor Frankl. He was a prisoner of war in WWII in a Nazi Concentration Camp in Germany. He survived and wrote the amazing book, Man’s Search for Meaning. He attributes his survival during that terrible time in his life to his psychotherapeutic method, which involved identifying the purpose of his life. Then, he worked on feeling positive about his new-found purpose. Next, with every fiber of his soul, he imagined the outcome of what he know proclaimed to now be the purpose of his life. Woody, you should read the book to find out what his purpose was.

Now, for some of the other prisoners who got through it, their purpose was just to survive. They wanted to be able to tell the rest of the world what happened in Hitler’s concentration camps so that it would never happen again.

Finding one’s purpose is not always so clear-cut for most of us, though. For many, finding meaning in our lives is complex. I imagine it’s not going to be easy for you, Woody, to find your meaning. But, regardless, you still need to embark on this difficult life-journey so that you can have a chance of understanding that life is much more than just being born and dying. What fun is that anyway, you emotional creature? Woody, life can be fun and meaningful, but, you’re going to have to do the work to make that happen.

So get out there, Woody, and get in the game. Once you do this, I think you’ll see things in a much better way…
