Well, Coran, I’d start with telling you what I’ve told thousands of parents over the last two decades. Your children won’t tell you, but they really do want you to know that they are listening to you, even when they are acting like they aren’t. So keep talking to them. It’s sinking in. They’re just pretending that it isn’t.

Also, teens want their parents to know that they love them very much. No matter how much they complain, whine, or even act like ungrateful pains in the butt, they still love you and want you to know it, even if it is a secret sometimes.

The next thing teens want you to know, but won’t tell you, is that they really do need sleep, regardless of what they say. Coran, all of our kids want to act grown up, and being grown up in their minds means staying up late. But, regardless of what they say, you need to man up and put them to bed. They need their sleep. They don’t want to feel terrible in the morning. And they’ll secretly be grateful that you stuck by your guns and put them to bed like all parents are supposed to do.

In addition, Coran, our kids what us to know that it’s not the end of the world if they get a “C” or “D” in a class. It just means that they have some improvements to make. It’s a learning experience. It doesn’t mean they’re on track now for Skid Row. Things will be okay. Stick by their side and help them improve without getting too mad about the whole thing.

Finally, if our kids show an interest in something, they really are hoping that we’ll find some kind of club or activity that will further help them pursue their interest. So go ahead and encourage your kids to try new things, and when they show some interest, help them follow up on that interest.

Hope this helps, Coran. Now go spend some time with your kids.
