I’m not judged by how many times I fail but by how many times I succeed. And the number of times I succeed is in direct proportion to the number of times I can fail and keep on trying!

Now, let’s look at this advice in the view of the old middle school dance. Can you picture all the boys standing on one side of the room wishing that they were dancing, and all the girls standing on the other side of the room hoping the same? Do you remember when that first bold boy would walk across the gym floor to ask a girl to dance, and she would reject him and everybody would laugh at him?

Ouch… Ohh… that poor deflated boy. He just crashed and burned just like we all figured he would. I bet you that he won’t be eager to do that again, right? Sadly, most of us still believe that we are judged on our past failures.

But, wait… what if this boy doesn’t take this rejection as an insurmountable failure? And what if he doesn’t retreat, but rather ask the next girl, and then the next girl to dance? Odds are that one of them will take his hand and rush out onto the dance floor to boogie.

What do you think will happen next? That’s right. All his buddies on the far side of the room will stop laughing, and the other girls will probably wish that they had been standing a little bit closer to this brave boy. Bottom line: once we find a winner, people tend to rejoice in the victory and forget about the failures.
