Cecelia, it’s frustrating to see all the unused talent and potential that our children have, especially when they act helpless. It takes a village to raise a child. I know this is also frustrating and a bit scary, but along with doing whatever we parents can to get our young boys moving, we’re also going to have to put some faith in the village.
We don’t have to do it all alone, Cecelia. The immature and unmotivated middle school boy that you have been dealing with and frustrated by is finally leaving middle school and is now going into high school, where he’ll be surrounded by a lot of older kids.
I’m sure you’ve heard that we tend to become a product of our environment. Well, Cecelia, right now your boy is a product of the middle school environment, but soon, he will gradually start to become a product of the high school environment. I know that some days it won’t seem like this transformation is happening fast enough, but it will happen. Trust me.
While in high school, the village broadens to include the older students I just mentioned, who will disapprove of the immature middle school behaviors that tend to linger for some ninth graders. In addition, teachers and coaches will hold their new students to a higher standard and force them to grow up some and get their butts moving.
Now I’m not going to say that high school alone will fix all unmotivated young boys. But parents working with high schools and other partners in the community, as well as a plethora of other factors for that age group, will help our boys become more mature.
Cecelia, I’m sure it hasn’t been an easy road so far, and I’m sure you don’t have an easy road ahead of you, either. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I think your boy will get there sooner than you expect.
