Wow! That’s a question that could require volumes of work to answer. However, since you didn’t ask me how to make our children perfect, but only better, I think I might have some answers to share with you.
Let’s do some math. Schools are in session about six hours a day, 180 days a year. One quarter of a day for half a year is an eighth of a year. Anything that only takes up an eighth of our time surely will not solve all of our problems, nor will it make us experts in anything. Regardless, though, we can still help our kids do better in school.
So, where do we start? Well, let’s start with parents and schools making sure that they have a very positive relationship. In order to develop the essential element of trust, neither ever speaks negatively of the other, especially in front of the children.
Schools must build positive relationships and trust with their students, parents, and the community. Parents can help kids do better by showing an interest and being supportive in what the kids are doing in school. Hey, just one caring adult can turn a kid around and create a positive school experience. With a positive school experience, a child’s school years become more productive. More productive school years equal a better adult life.
The math is adding up nicely, isn’t it? Another thing educators can do is to make their classes relevant to kids’ needs, maybe even slightly entertaining and dynamic. Sometimes this can be achieved simply by teachers personalizing the information through great story-telling.
So in conclusion, Patrice, a few wise strategy to help our children do better in school is for schools, parents, and the community that our kids reside in to all work together and never speak negatively of each other, especially in front of the children. Let’s all take responsibility and go the extra mile, okay? Our kids deserve at least that much, even on their worst days…
