Dear Granddaddy, what is the best advice, you as an adult, can give me a teenager? Alex
VLOG ON THIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O25LYgspa3I
Well, Alex, a wise old man once told me this valuable piece of advice that I’m now going to pass on to you.
At 20 years old, you feel like everyone is looking at you. At 40,, you don’t care who’s watching. And at 60, you finally realize that no one was really watching.
I know it can be rough sometimes as a teen. There is a lot of peer pressure. But don’t fall victim to peer pressure, especially false peer pressure. Remember what your future 60 year old self will tell you someday, “No one was really watching…”
Alex, travel as much as you can. Traveling will broaden your horizons, empower you, as a world citizen, and help you empathetically understand others. Now I know the money may be tight and you may not think you can afford to travel, but I’m telling you that you can’t afford not to travel. Besides, if you think the money is tight right now as a single person only responsible for yourself, wait until you’re married and you’re responsible for a bunch of people…
Alex, Dr. Angela Duckworth wrote a book called, “Grit,” that you need to read. I wish I had read that book as a teen. I finally read it, love it, highlighted a bunch of it, and then gave it to my teenage son to read. Do yourself a favor and get that book. Trust me, you’re going to need a lot of grit in your life.
Also, get a bunch of books and keep getting yourself more bunches of books. I don’t know how important you think reading is, but I can tell you for a fact that it is important to be a life-long reader and a life-long learner. Unfortunately, many people never read another book after graduating from school. Don’t be one of those people who become frozen in time as an intellectual and emotional 18 year old for the rest of their lives. I hope this helped, Alex.
