Wow! That’s a very good question, Nancy. It sounds like you don’t really want to grow up. And I can’t blame you because sometimes I don’t really want to either. I still joke about what I want to be when I grow up… Come to think of it, I am still not sure…
However, in this new global economy, we may be able to manage our future lives so that we don’t have to fully grow up. You see, in the old days growing up meant getting a good, stable job and then staying there for the next thirty years. If one worked for Aetna and sole insurance, then that’s just what one did for most of his or her adult life.
Today, it’s different. These days, we will get many opportunities to recreate ourselves with new and exciting jobs and careers. This is going to be pretty cool in that unlike previous generations that were stuck in whatever job they happened to have, we’ll always be growing into our next new thing.
Another reason why people don’t want to grow up is that they feel like there is just too much responsibility associated with growing up and it’s too hard. However, the word “responsibility” doesn’t have to be such a drag on our young and hip lifestyles. Hey, isn’t, the word responsibility turned around just the ability to respond? And don’t we want to have the ability to respond to whatever life throws at us? Don’t we want to be able to throw on our own superhero capes and do whatever is necessary?
Well, Nancy, I hope I showed you that none of us is ever going to have to fully grow up in these modern times. And, regarding the amount of growing up we do, it’s still going to be okay in this great, big, super world that we all sharing. Oh, one last thing: Peter Pan’s friends always grew up and left him… we don’t want that same life-style problems that Peter Pan had, do we?
