Well, Daria, that’s a very good question. First, I would say to make sure you’re spending a lot of time with every one of your children. Please, don’t succumb to that false argument that you don’t need to spend a large quantity of time with your children because you spend quality time with them, instead. It’s simply just not true. Our kids need us to spend time with them, and not all of it needs to be quality time. Sometimes, it can be just good old fashioned time.
Another thing you can do to keep your kids on the right path is to have open lines of communication with them. You have to talk to them, and talk to them often, Daria. If you’re not in their ears, then their less wise, less experienced, and more foolish friends are going to be, instead. Make it your goal to be the louder, wiser, and more consistent voice in their heads that keeps them from straying.
Also, help them experience life with guidance. Kids have to know about the real world, both the good and bad of it, at least to some degree. If they don’t understand the real world at least a little bit, then they may stray off their path out of curiosity. And remember what curiosity did to the cat. Help your kids learn what their options are, as well as the positive and negative consequences. With you as their compass, Daria, your kids will be able to find their path to their own north star and a better life.
Finally, believe it or not, we can do everything right, and sometimes, things still go awry with our children. If this happens, don’t take it as a personal failure. Instead, treat it as another learning experience for all involved.
Good luck with those kids, Daria, but I already know that they are in good hands. And someday, when they’re older, they will realize it, too, and actually thank you. Until then, Daria, keep on keeping on.
