Damian, it certainly is much tougher these days for high school students to find a job than it was for my generation. I think about how hard it is out there for kids today and it saddens me. But you know how they say that every cloud has a silver lining? Well, there may be a silver lining in your difficulty finding a job…
I know it stinks not to have the pocket-money that a job brings, but look at it this way, it’s likely that you will be working for a very long time once you do start working. Are you sure you want to be in such a big rush to begin working? I’ve got news for you, Damian. Many people out there probably wouldn’t say that working really hard for fifty years at a job is better than working sort of hard for four years in high school at your studies.
Don’t be in such a rush to grow up, Damian. Enjoy your high school years of just being a kid. Those years go by quickly and are precious and sweet, even if it doesn’t always feel like it. Take full advantage of what your high school has to offer you. You’ll have the rest of your life to work.
Another advantage of not rushing into a job in high school is that you can take some time to find your interests. You could do volunteer work for organizations that promote good causes. Hey, you’ll have the time if you didn’t rush into working a job, right? You’ll meet some good people and develop useful skills volunteering. Maybe you’ll eventually even find a job in one of those fields and actually get paid to make a positive difference in the world.
So, once again, Damian, I know it’s tough not having a job and pocket-money yet, but have some patience, it will happen eventually. In the meantime, keep building your knowledge, skills, and network. Really good things are going to happen for you.
