DEAR GRANDDADDY- A Teen, Parent, and Educator Advice Column BLOG #18

Dear Granddaddy, I’m worried over these school shootings that we have been seeing in the news. Breanna S. – Mom of 3 school-age children.

Bestselling and award-winning author, speaker, educator, and TV host.

Breanna, I, too, am saddened over this senseless violence taking place in some of our nation’s schools. However, I have sat in on various state-level educational meetings on this topic, and during these meetings something has become evident to me. While this violence is senseless, we must remain calm and keep moving forward. We must persevere and preserve our American way of life. We can’t live in fear.

Our children really are safe in our public schools. While the tragedies get a lot of publicity, they are isolated incidents. The odds of a particular student being shot at school in a given year are approximately one in eight million. Now that’s still not zero, but it should help to put the risk in perspective. As an inner-city educator for two plus decades, I am extremely confident that our schools are safe. Every day I send my own five children to a public school. While it’s only natural for a parent to worry, I know that my children are very safe in our public school system.

As I said, I’ve been a public school teacher for over twenty years. I work in Connecticut’s largest inner-city high school, and I can personally assure you that teachers don’t feel threatened or worry that our lives are in any kind of danger while we’re getting ready for work each morning. I can also say with confidence that my fellow educators and I, who are in the trenches, don’t fear for our students’ safety either. While I know that more still needs to be done, I also know that schools really are safe. This craziness is not the norm.

So in conclusion, Breanna, while your concern about the safety of your children is understandable, don’t worry too much. Don’t let this craziness we’ve been seeing lately stop you and your children from living your lives. It’s going to be okay. Trust me. Go ahead and boldly live your lives to their fullest.
