You’re right. I know who you are, but it was more than a few years ago. I always knew you’d grow up to be a fine young man. I never doubted that you would survive and thrive. And thrive you have! I know this because I’ve kept an eye on you over the years without you knowing it. I wanted to be able to step out of the shadows if you ever needed me again… and you haven’t.
I knew you’d succeed as an adult because you were a good student. You were coachable. And even at your worst moments, I could tell that you were listening to me. And that’s all you needed to do to get through the day, and then get back to me the next day so we could do it again.
If you don’t mind, my old friend, I’d like to share one of our secrets with the readers of this column. Hey, everyone! I’m talking to you now. It’s a tough world out there. It’s dog-eat-dog, and I’m wearing Milk Bone underwear, and you probably are, too.
So this is what we’re going to do about it. We’re going to agree that we all have emotional bank accounts that this big, tough world takes daily withdrawals from. But the good thing is that through positive friends, books, music, movies, and a plethora of other things, we get to make daily emotional deposits in that account. These can easily eclipse the bad withdrawals that world sucks out of us.
My friend, I know you remember our talks. I know you still make positive deposits in your emotional bank account. Hopefully, together, we can get others to do the same and help them survive and thrive while building a better world. I’m watching you. I’m watching all of you.
