I feel your pain, Ahmen. When I was your age, a lot of us had paper routes. It was hard work delivering papers, but it gave us a chance to develop responsibility and earn some cash.

Time doesn’t stand still, and the newspaper industry, just like every other industry, is very different these days. To tell you the truth, I don’t think kids even deliver newspapers anymore. And I’m kind of saddened by that opportunity not being there for you kids today.

However, one characteristics of a leader is not to dwell on what once was, but instead on what could be. Winners adapt and overcome, right?

Today, I know it’s tough for teens even to get entry level positions because college kids and senior citizens now do those types of jobs. And with today’s stricter labor laws, Ahmen, it’s even harder for a fourteen year old like yourself to go the traditional route to make a few bucks. Well, come to think of it, I suppose you could still do manual labor like shoveling snow or raking leaves to make to make some money if you’re willing to work hard and are eager to go find the work…

But here’s another suggestion. Since today we find ourselves in the middle of the information age and you’re a digital native, Ahmen, maybe you should do something like starting a blog. Pay attention in school and work very hard at your communication skills of reading, writing, and speaking, and you might just be able to put together a pretty cool blog that communicates a great message within a specific niche and could make you a few bucks.

Now don’t stop there, Ahmen. Put on your problem solving hat, and bounce ideas off your classmates to see what other exciting things you could try to develop that are a bit outside the box and include the entrepreneurial spirit this country was built on. Good luck! And please let me know how it goes.
