YES! I agree with you, Frank. Parenting might be one of the hardest jobs in the whole world. And like you, I, too, have been frustrated countless times and humbled way more often than I can remember.

I wish I knew a little more about your specific situation, Frank, but since I don’t, I’ll try to humor you a little bit through some unspoken understandings or truisms.

Remember when we were young kids trying to grow up as fast as we could so we could find our way in this world? Remember when our parents seemed a bit strange? For example, remember when we thought it was weird that our fathers wore shoes instead of sneakers? I mean, why would anyone wear shoes instead of sneakers? Everyone knows it slows you down. If you want to be your fastest, you need to wear sneakers.

Remember when we wondered why the heck our fathers brought extra work home to do at night? We wondered again what the heck our fathers were thinking. Everyone knows you can’t have fun at night if you still have work to do. Who would choose to do that?

Remember when we wondered where our dad’s friends were? Why wasn’t he always hanging out with his buddies? Everyone knows you have to hang out with your friends if you’re going to be cool.

And how come our fathers didn’t know the latest movies, music, or games? Everyone knows that it’s cool to keep up on pop culture. And why were our fathers so clumsy and accidentally bumping into us when they were rushing to do who knows what and looking all stressed out?

Well, guess what, Frank? It’s now our turn to be our fathers. But don’t sweat it too much. It won’t always be our turn. Someday our cool little sons will get their chance to be us. So in the meantime, let’s just keep doing the best we can do, and let’s give them the best example possible.

Feeling any better yet, Frank?
