Well, Steven, I’m glad that you’re thinking about your future. However, I don’t want you to overthink it and cause yourself unnecessary stress. Although you should look down the road from time to time, you don’t have to figure it all out in high school. I remember when my high school guidance counselor used to drive me crazy by demanding that I decide right then and there what I was going to do with the rest of my life.
Rarely in my life have I felt certain about my life’s path. I’m getting really close to the half century mark now, and for over twenty years, I have been a teacher, sports coach, life coach, author, speaker, and father. This winding path has made me an educator, however the road of education always seems to be changing. Whenever I have looked down that road and visualized how the rest of my path would go, it always eventually ended up winding in a different direction and proving me wrong more often than right.
I’m still not sure what I’m going to do with the rest of my life, Steven. As a teenager, you may find that odd, but, I don’t think it really is weird or uncommon. You’d be surprised how many people my age feel as you do about their futures.
Besides, we’re supposed to be lifelong learners, right? You see, life is a journey, not a destination. There’s no time limit for you to pick what you want to do with your life. You don’t strike out after three tries as in baseball. You can change your mind as often as you want. up until the day they put you in the ground at your final resting place.
So don’t sweat it too much Steven, if you don’t know what you want to do. You have plenty of time to learn, embrace the lessons of life, and contribute to humanity. And you will most likely contribute in many different ways.
