Travel in Time with Dan Blog Episode 83: Newport Tower

The Mystery of the Newport Tower: History, Legend, and Leadership

In the heart of Touro Park in Newport, Rhode Island, stands one of the most enigmatic architectural anomalies in New England: the Newport Tower. While the vast majority of colonial structures in the region were built of wood, this “old stone mill” is a short, squatty, and thick stone structure that has baffled visitors for generations.

Architectural Anomalies and Celestial Windows

Standing approximately 28 feet high and 24 feet in diameter, the tower’s design is unlike anything else from its era. Its interior features a second-level fireplace and several windows, which some researchers believe were designed to align with specific celestial events and timings. This unusual round architecture, so different from the square wooden structures common in early New England, has given rise to a whirlwind of “hidden history” and conspiracy theories.

A Timeline of Theories: From Vikings to Knights Templar

Because the origins of the tower are so debated, several fascinating theories have emerged over the centuries:

  • The Norse Theory: Some suggest the tower dates back to the 1100s, serving as a settlement or church for Vikings in Vinland.
  • The Knights Templar: Another theory posits that in 1398, medieval Knights Templar fled Europe to escape persecution, potentially burying gold near the site.
  • The Chinese Fleet: Some believe the tower was built as an observatory by a great Chinese fleet sailing around the world.
  • Portuguese Watchtower: Others claim Portuguese explorers built it as a watchtower in the 1500s.

The Evidence: Benedict Arnold and Carbon Dating

While the legends of buried gold and ancient explorers are compelling, historical records and modern science offer a different story. The structure is mentioned in the will of Benedict Arnold Senior, the first governor of Rhode Island and the great-grandfather of the infamous Revolutionary War traitor. Arnold referred to the building as his “old stone windmill“.

This colonial origin was further supported when Danish scientists performed carbon-14 dating on the structure. Their findings placed the construction of the tower between 1635 and 1698, firmly within the colonial era. Despite this scientific evidence, the unusual stone architecture continues to make people wonder if there is more to the story that isn’t being told. And the Viking theory continues to be the most popular. Who can blame them when even Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote adoringly about the Viking theory?

A Lesson in Leadership

The Newport Tower is not just a historical site; it is a case study in how we process information. The tower teaches us that archaeology and science matter, even when popular culture tries to reshape history.

True leaders can learn from the mystery of the tower by practicing the following:

  • Questioning assumptions rather than accepting legends at face value.
  • Examining evidence with a critical eye.
  • Avoiding jumping to conclusions based on unusual appearances.
  • Separating facts from speculation.
