Sammy, I’m feeling that, too! I am also overworked in school because that’s my job, and lots of us are overworked at our jobs. I am also overworked in life because I have to work multiple jobs to feed my five kids and then try to keep up with all of them…

However, when you said that you are only a 7th grader and you feel like you’re overworked in school and in life, it made me pause. Honestly, I didn’t know what to say. I mean you’re only in 7th grade and you feel like you’re overworked in school and in life!

Hmm… is this what our country has come to? If so, what can we do about it? Where can we find some balance? How do we maintain or maybe even get back the quality of life our grandparents felt they had when our factories were humming and our country was booming?

I’m saddened, sometimes, to be at this point in history… But then again, there are always two sides to every story, even in history. And I should know because I teach history. Sammy, maybe we’re just feeling growing pains. Maybe the increased global competition will make us all perform better, as when Greece revived the old Olympic Games back in 1896. And what about Teddy Roosevelt during that same era saying that we all should strive to live the strenuous life?

Maybe this world is forcing us to become more efficient and trying to pull our eyeballs away from all those screens we have been staring at. Maybe it’s causing us to get to know ourselves better so we will have a better understanding of when we should work hard, when to relax, and when to stare at a screen.

Well, I don’t know how much I helped you, Sammy, but I can say this with confidence: “Hang in there. You’re stronger than you think.” And finally, rest assured that things have a way of working themselves out and getting better over time.
