Jan, I know what you’re going through because my family also has a daughter that age. Your worry or even maybe your fear is entirely totally reasonable. And I guess it’s just part of our parenting job for us to worry about our kids all the time. And I’m pretty sure that our parents had that same worrying gene, too, so they must have gone through the same misgivings and concerns that we are going through now. And somehow they survived it.

I’ve said this a million times over the years, but I think it needs to be repeated, so here it goes again. Somehow we survived and even thrived in spite of the trials and tribulations we faced as youngsters, and somehow our kids will, too.

I know these simple words are not enough to alieve all of our parenting fears of our kids driving, but we’re just going to somehow to trust them. And we’re going to have to trust ourselves, too.

What do I mean by trusting ourselves? Simple. We’ve invested a lot of years and a lot of energy in our children’s growth and development that has brought them here to this next milestone of driving a car on their own. We’re going to have to trust ourselves that we did a good enough job and have instilled the skills and knowledge that our kids need to make the right decisions behind the wheel of a car. We’re also going to have to trust them to be responsible. If we don’t ever give them the chance to be accountable, then how are they ever going to learn it?

I’m not saying that we should blindly assume that they’ll be responsible. It’s probably a good idea to check and verify how they’re doing. But alongside this supervision, Jan, we’re also going to have to trust so they can continue to develop in their lifelong journey and successfully make it through future milestones as equipped and capable as possible, Jan.
