The Visionary Ruins of Waterbury: A Journey to Holy Land USA
If you have ever driven along I-84 in Waterbury, Connecticut, you have likely looked up at Pine Hill and wondered about the massive cross overlooking the highway. For decades, that cross has served as a beacon for one of the most unique roadside attractions in New England: Holy Land USA.
A Vision on a Hill
The story begins in 1955 with a man named John Baptist Greco. A struggling attorney with a singular vision, Greco wanted to create an 18-acre religious theme park that would allow Americans to experience the “Holy Land” without having to travel overseas to Israel.
Despite having little money and facing skepticism from those who couldn’t see his vision, Greco was determined. He formed a volunteer organization called the Companions of Christ. Using the power of synergy and repurposed materials, these volunteers donated their labor to build a miniature world out of whatever free materials they could find.
The Golden Age of Roadside Tourism
At its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, Holy Land USA was one of Connecticut’s premier tourist destinations. It saw upwards of 40,000 visitors a year who came to see the replicas of Bethlehem, Jerusalem, the Garden of Eden, and the Tower of Babylon. It wasn’t just a park; it was a community space that even hosted weddings.
Theft, Tragedy, and Decay
The decline of Holy Land USA began in 1984 when Greco closed the park for renovations. Sadly, the individuals entrusted with the project stole the money, leaving the park in limbo. When Greco passed away in 1986, the park lost its primary leader and visionary.
The property was left to a group of religious teachers, the Filippini Sisters, but without the necessary funds or Greco’s driving energy, the site fell into total disrepair. For years, it sat as a “roadside oddity,” attracting urban explorers and photographers rather than pilgrims.
A New Chapter
In 2013, Waterbury Mayor Neil O’Leary and a local businessman purchased the property for approximately $350,000 with hopes of returning it to its roots as a community space. While the site remains in significant disrepair due to the rocky terrain and high costs of renovation, a new, larger LED-lit cross now stands on the hill, visible for miles at night.
Today, the Visitors Bureau of Waterbury still receives thousands of calls each year from people seeking directions to these “legendary ruins”.
The Leadership Lesson
There is a powerful lesson in these ruins: Leadership begins with a vision. John Greco looked at an empty, rocky hill and saw something no one else could see.
As you drive by the giant cross in Waterbury, remember that history is all around us, not just in textbooks. Sometimes, it is found in the quiet, decaying replicas on a hill, waiting for someone to notice and tell its story.
