Travel in Time with Dan Blog Episode 56: Mercy Brown – New England Vampire Panic

Fear, Folklore, and the Frozen Ground: The Tragedy of Mercy Brown

In the quiet town of Exeter, Rhode Island, lies a relic of a dark chapter in American history: the New England Vampire Panic. Standing in the Chestnut Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, one can find the final resting place of Mercy Brown, a young woman whose death sparked a wave of mass hysteria that blurred the lines between science and superstition.

A Family Under Siege

The story of the Brown family is one of immense tragedy. In the late 19th century, an “invisible threat” began picking off family members one by one. First, the mother, Mary, passed away. Then, the eldest daughter, also named Mary, followed. When Mercy herself fell ill and died, the community became convinced that a curse was at work. And now, her brother Edwin was sick.

At the time, the family was suffering from what we now know as tuberculosis, then called “consumption”. The symptoms were haunting: victims would waste away, their skin turning deathly white as if their very lifeblood was being drained. Lacking scientific understanding, the townspeople turned to folklore, believing a “vampire” among the deceased was feeding on the living relatives.

The Macabre Discovery

Mercy’s father, George Brown, was a rational man who initially resisted the town’s demands to exhume his family. However, the community’s “hounding” eventually wore him down. When the bodies were dug up, the mother and eldest sister showed expected signs of decomposition. Mercy, however, did not.

Because Mercy had died in the winter and her body was kept in a frozen crypt, she appeared remarkably well-preserved. When investigators found blood still in her heart and organs, they were convinced she was the vampire. In a desperate, macabre ritual to save Mercy’s brother, Edwin, the townspeople burned her heart and liver into ashes, mixed them into a tonic, and forced Edwin to drink it. Tragically, the “cure” failed, and Edwin died a few months later.

Science vs. Superstition

Today, we understand the science they lacked. Tuberculosis explained the wasting sickness, and the New England winter explained Mercy’s preservation. While it is easy to view these actions as “craziness,” it is important to remember that these people were acting out of desperation and fear without the benefit of modern knowledge. This hysteria mirrors other historical events, such as the Salem Witch Trials, where leadership failed and fear took the reins.

The Leadership Lesson

There is a profound leadership lesson to be found in the soil of Exeter: Fear + Lack of Knowledge = Dangerous Decisions.

When people do not understand a threat, they often stop acting rationally and start “guessing”. As we saw in Mercy’s case—and even in modern times with events like the COVID-19 pandemic—decisions made in a vacuum of knowledge can lead to disastrous outcomes. To lead effectively, one must:

  • Fight the fear with facts and rational thinking.
  • Seek out true knowledge before taking drastic actions.
  • Recognize that mass hysteria can happen in any era if leadership fails to provide clarity.

Visit the History

If you find yourself in Rhode Island, the Chestnut Hill Baptist Church is still an operating site where you can visit Mercy’s grave. It is a common tradition for visitors to leave stones or coins on her tombstone for luck. You can also see the very crypt down the road where Mercy’s body was held, a chilling reminder of the day science and folklore collided.

Exploring these sites allows us to respect the history while learning the vital leadership principles needed to avoid the panics of the past.
